The Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network and the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC) have funding available to support Barrow Young Researcher’s visit to Barrow. In turn, LTER and BASC are asking the recipient to work with BASC to arrange speaking engagements in North Slope Borough schools and through the Schoolyard Saturday project.
The Schoolyard Saturday events are for interested community members (nonscientists) on any scientific subject, although ideally it should be on environmental research conducted at Barrow, Toolik Lake, and/or northern Alaska. The goals are to interact with residents of the North Slope about research performed in the area; and to establish and maintain a two-way communication between scientists and local residents.
The Arctic LTER has funding to support travel of at least two speakers to Barrow during 2010. Travel support includes an airplane ticket, meals and lodging for a day or two in Barrow. Depending on availability, BASC offers additional lodging to provide an opportunity for the visitor to perform field research.
Congratulations to the 2010 winners!Bonita Dainowski, Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Candidate, Biology and Wildlife Department, University of Alaska Fairbanks

The Barrow Young Researchers (BYR) network aims to increase communication among early career scientists active in research related to Barrow, Northern Alaska. BYR was initiated by the Barrow Environmental Observatory subcommittee of the BASC Science Management Advisory Committee in 2009.
