On-call IT Support - Hardware and Software

  • BASC's IT Manager, Brad Heaston is available 24-hrs to assist your project. Brad lives year-round in Barrow, and can be easily reached in an emergency.

  • Brad Heaston carries the following certifications to assist you with your research:

High-Speed Communications

  • BASC offers researchers T-1 (1.5 MB per second) communications in all laboratories, living spaces, and communal areas on the NARL campus.

  • BASC offers wireless communications in all facilities, as well, utilizing Wi-Fi Standards for IEEE 802.11b and 802.11g

  • Hewlett-Packard (HP) xw4100 & xw4200 Workstations, 3.20Ghz Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading technology, 8x DVD RW, 176 GB SCSI HD, 1 GB RAM, NVIDIA Pro Video Card, USB 2 and FireWire ports. 19" LCD monitors.
  • Apple G5 Workstations with dual 2.0 Ghz processors, DVD RW, 2 GB RAM, and 135 GB HD. 20" LCD monitors.
  • Network storage for your projects, backed-up nightly.
  • High-speed networked HP LaserJet 4300 lab printers.
  • High-speed networked HP DesignJet 5500 UVPS 42" Plotter. The UV allows for vivid printing that won't fade in the bright summers.
  • High-speed networked Canon Color ImageRUNNER 5180i. This color printer is also a fax machine, copier, and color networked scanner.
  • Spare 19" LCD monitors -- don't ship up your monitors, we have loaners for your use!
  • Managed and unmanaged switches for setting up computer labs.
  • Several laptops are available for check-out, with extra batteries for extended field use.
  • Digital cameras, keyboards, mice, networking cables, power cables, USB cables, Firewire cables, wireless cards, and more (like blank CDs and DVDs, diskettes...)
  • Video Editing Workstation with Final Cut Pro HD and multiple line input.

  • On the software side...
  • All workstations have a full suite of Microsoft software, including Microsoft Office 2007 Professional and Microsoft Visio 2007 Professional, Macs having Office 2004. Microsoft Project 2007 is available upon request.
  • All workstations have a full suite of Adobe software, including Adobe Creative Suite 2 Professional: Photoshop CS2, InDesign CS2, Illustrator CS2, GoLive CS2, and Acrobat 7.0 Professional.
  • All workstations have ArcGIS 9.x, ENVI, IDL, SPSS, and Mathematica.
  • BASC can support your custom databases. BASC prefers MS SQL 2000/2005, MySQL, or FileMaker Server for all network databases. Additionally, we have server-based Business Objects' Crystal Reports 11 for running your custom reports. Crystal Reports will link to most ODBC databases.
  • BASC can also offer laptop and workstation backups utilizing VERITAS BackUp Exec. Please note, this could require the installation of software on your personal laptop.

  • BASC is an authorized charity/academic licensee of Microsoft, Macromedia, Adobe, and others. If you need software not noted on this list, feel free to contact the BASC IT Manager, Brad Heaston. In many instances, we can work with your host institution to "forward" your licenses to BASC while you work on projects in Barrow!
